Borris-Ileigh cruised into the semi-finals of the North Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship having handed out a 25-point hammering to Templederry in this one-sided quarter final on Tuesday evening.

Starting without five first choice players in Brendan & Kevin Maher, Dan McCormack, Paddy Stapleton, and Tommy Ryan, one expected Borris-Ileigh to be vulnerable against a Templederry side off the back of an extra time win over Roscrea in the first round.

However, Templederry brought none of that momentum into the match and were thirteen points down at half time as Borris-Ileigh were too good in all aspects of the game, upping a gear from their first-round win over Lorrha.

And it was the Borris-Ileigh young guns who were to the fore, none more so than eighteen-year-old Eddie Ryan who finished with a massive 1-14, 1-5 from play. James Devaney added eight points from play while Jerry Kelly was also hugely effective from centre forward with six, including two side-line cuts.

After a hugely impressive league and first round championship win, this defeat is going to sting Templederry. They were focused for the game but at no stage did they look like containing Borris-Ileigh and will now have to stew on this for two and a half weeks ahead of the start of the O Riain Cup.

Sean Ryan began where he left off against Roscrea with Templederry’s opening score but quickly Borris-Ileigh settled into a rhythm with much of their good play going through Jerry Kelly who was drifting deep from centre forward to good effect.

The sides were level 0-5 to 1-2 on nine minutes after Padraig O’Leary goaled for Templederry, but Borris-Ileigh responded with a Kelly point followed by an Eddie Ryan 65 after Kelly had a penalty well saved by Templederry’s Tim McCutcheon after Niall Kenny was pulled down in the square.

Conor Kenny was also prominent in the early going as Borris-Ileigh led 0-11 to 1-3 at the first water-break. They rattled off another three points before Eddie Ryan goaled on 23 minutes from a rebound after his initial shot was saved by McCutcheon.

Templederry only managed two points in the second quarter from Adrian & Sean Ryan as they trailed at half time 1-18 to 1-5.

Brian Stapleton whipped over three points early in the second half but there was never a hint of a Templederry comeback, not helped by the fact that Brendan Maher and Paddy Stapleton were sprung from the bench as injury replacements.

Borris-Ileigh kept adding the points at their ease with Ryan, Devaney and Kelly all adding to their huge tallies while Colm Boyle also got in on the act.

Templederry’s second goal from a 21-yard free by Eanna Murray on 51 minutes was almost immediately cancelled out by a Paddy Stapleton goal at the other end as Borris-Ileigh could also afford to shoot fourteen wides as they crushed a very disappointing Templederry side.
