Annual contests return for Nenagh Toastmasters

On Tuesday, October 19, at our usual venue of the Abbey Court Hotel, Nenagh Toastmasters had our annual contests for Humorous Speech and Table Topics.

In the Humorous Speech Contest each contestant delivers an original prepared speech on any subject of their choice with a humorous content. The speeches are five to seven minutes long. A number of judges are appointed and the speeches are assessed under a range of criteria.

This year the contestants were Sean Butler, Madeline Cleary, Tony Spain, Willie Grace, and Joe Ryan. Each one delivered very funny and enjoyable speeches. The outcome was that first place went to Willie Grace and second to Madeline Cleary. Congratulations to the winners and all the participants. We were all very entertained.

The Table Topics Contest is a test of impromptu speaking; each contestant is given the same topic and immediately speaks in response for two minutes. All the contestants are kept outside the room until it is their turn. The judges assess each speaker.

The participants were Eileen Kennedy, Sean Butler, Joe Ryan, Tony Spain and Willie Grace. Joe Ryan came first and Sean Butler was second. Again, congratulations to all who participated.

Those who came first or second got to take part in the Area Final on Saturday last. Sean Butler was not available, so Tony Spain took his place in the Table Topics contest.

The Area Final involves the winners from Roscrea, Nenagh, Ballina and two Limerick clubs. Our Nenagh contestants came up with a win when Madeline Cleary won the Humorous Speech Contest.

Congratulations to Madeline and indeed all the Nenagh contestants, who did us all proud. Madeline goes on to represent our Area in the Division Final on November 20. Best of luck, Madeline.

Our meetings are back to our normal in-person meetings in the Abbey Court Hotel every second Tuesday. In November they are coming up next on Tuesday 16 and 30. Each meeting starts at 8.15pm sharp. Why not come along and see what is happening? We are all learners, and visitors will not be expected to speak.
