Groundhog Day at Nenagh courthouse

Another Christmas of pandemic restrictions was lamented at Nenagh District Court last Friday.

Before the commencement of proceedings, President of the Tipperary Solicitors Bar Association Mariea Flanagan recalled hope in late 2020 that things were going to change for the better. But, a year later, there was a sense of “Goundhog Day” at the court’s last scheduled sitting before Christmas.

Ms Flanagan paid tribute to all concerned in ensuring the continued running of the court through two difficult years. She acknowledged in particular Judge Elizabeth MacGrath’s work in managing the public and lengthy court lists. Also acknowledged was Sergeant Regina McCarthy, who took on the role of Garda representative in court during the year with great efficiency and a helpful manner.

Sgt McCarthy joined in wishing all present a happy Christmas and thanking them for their support during the year. She mentioned in particular the assistance of the Courts Service staff.

Court Clerk Tommy Mockler also joined in the tributes and spoke of the good working relationship between the judge, gardaí, solicitors and prison officers in Nenagh.

Judge MacGrath regretted that the opportunity to mingle after court was lost for another Christmas. While the current generation was not faced with any major conflict of a military nature, sheviewed the pandemic as being “our battle”.

“This is a war against an invisible enemy and a very cunning enemy,” Judge MacGrath said.

“The battle isn't over yet.”

The judge thanked all involved for their co-operation in the court system over the year.

It had been a difficult and stressful year, but people had worked together to try and stay safe and make the best they could of the situation. Judge MacGrath hoped that next year would bring better times.
