Prestigious cycling final for Nenagh

Several top cyclists to take part in June 23 event

All Ireland Finals for Nenagh

Cycling Ireland and Cycling Munster has selected Nenagh as the location for this year’s National Elite Time Trials, which will be held in the North Tipperary town on Thursday, June 23. The event is expected to draw large crowds to watch Ireland’s top cyclists vying for the honour of wearing the National Champions jersey.

The Time Trial event will include Elite Men, Elite Women, Junior Men, Junior Women and Paracycling national championships. Local cycling club North Tipperary Wheelers will host the event on the night with Tipperary County Council providing immense support and logistical support for the event. Other local cycling clubs including Lower Ormond (Borrisokane), Nenagh Cycling Club, Nenagh Tri Club and some of the Limerick Clubs are also assisting in hosting the event. Registration and sign on for the event will take place at Tipperary County Council offices from 5pm on Thursday, June 23, and the racing will commence from the former Five Alley pub on the old N7 Nenagh to Limerick Road along the cycleway from 7pm with cyclists being let off at one-minute intervals. Cyclists will head out into the prevailing wind towards Limerick until the Birdhill Roundabout where they will turn left for a short but sharp climb up the ramp to the M7 Junction 27 flyover before going round the roundabout, back down to the Birdhill roundabout and back to the finish line where it all started at the Five Alley. In total the distance covered will be 32.13km with an elevation gain of 176 metres and cyclists expected to average 40km per hour on the night.

Cycling Ireland said that the Nenagh Route along the old N7 utilising the cycleway was one of the best routes in Europe and certainly in Ireland and praised Tipperary County Council for their vision in having installed the cycleway. North Tipperary Wheelers have also proved themselves to have been excellent hosts and organisers in having hosted several Munster Time Trial events over the years. National media such as TG4 and RTÉ Sports News are expected to cover the event along with other local and sports media.

Approximately 100 elite female and male, para and able body cyclists will compete on the night. Although the names of the cyclists have not been announced yet it is expected that several professional cyclists will compete including well known cyclists such as Eddie Dunbar, Ryan Mullen and Nicholas Roche (also of Dancing with the Stars fame) expected to attend. Liam Callaghan of NTW said: “The event is not just for cyclists and we welcome the support and encouragement of the local communities to come out and cheer on the cyclists as they pass.”
