Nenagh Walking Club's 52km camino

Nenagh Walking Club members undertook a 52km August Bank Holiday Camino from Mountshannon to Abbey village, Co Galway.

On day one the Camino walkers hiked 22km along East Clare in glorious weather with wonderful views out over Lough Derg. On day two the walkers crossed into Co Galway along the foothills of Sliabh Aughty.

In the townland of Alleendara East, archaeologist Christy Cunniffe told the Camino walkers about the hidden history of the 1790s Northern Ireland Catholic refugees camp sites, there in the foothills of Sl Aughty. Then it was on to Woodford's delightful historic village and to well-deserved refreshments at Walshe’s pub.

On day three the Camino walkers arrived to the enchanting village of Abbey. There historian Ann Hodgens gave an excellent talk on the history of Abbey village and its surrounding countryside. The village derives it name from the Carthusian Abbey founded there in the 13th century.
