Joe MacDonagh centenary ceremony

A ceremony was held last Saturday at Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin to unveil a headstone at the grave of Cloughjordan's Joe MacDonagh, TD, the younger brother of the executed 1916 leader Thomas MacDonagh.

Joe died on Christmas Day 1922 from complications arising from appendicitis, after spending a number of weeks on hunger strike.

The unveiling was attended by his grandson Dr Joe MacDonagh, Muriel McAuley, grand-daughter of Thomas MacDonagh, and other members of the MacDonagh family.

Also present at the ceremony were members of the Cloughjordan Heritage Group, two pipers from the MacDonagh Pipe Band from Templemore and Gerard Shannon, the author of the recently published biography of Joe MacDonagh. The pipers from the MacDonagh Pipe Band, Joe Barry and Martin Fogarty, played tributes during the ceremony. A wreath was laid by the Cloughjordan Heritage Group at the headstone of Joe MacDonagh.
