Drugs 'the curse of our time'

Local councillor Séamie Morris has proposed holding an information night over the widespread prevalence of illegal drugs.

Speaking at last week's meeting of Nenagh Municipal District, he was particularly concerned with the "deluge of drugs" facing third level students. Young people are being exposed to "everything from tranquilisers to crack cocaine", he said, suggesting an awareness meeting in conjuction with Tipperary ETB.

ETB member Cllr Fiona Bonfield agreed to raise the idea with the board and said the Government's new Citizens Assembly on drug use may also be beneficial. Cllr Bonfield said the issue affects every town and village, with children as young as primary school age now taking drugs.

Cllr John Rocky McGrath referred to drugs as "the curse of our time". "They are an absolute plague around the county," he said.
