Newport find Pike too hot to handle

High flying Premier ‘A’ side Newport Town were brought crashing back to earth when they came up against a rampant Pike Rovers side in the quarter final of the Lawson Cup in Derryleigh Park on Sunday.

An early goal by Colin Daly rocked Newport back on their heels and concession of a soft penalty kick, converted by Steven McGann made their second half task even more formidable.

Pike pressed on after the restart and McGann scored a second before Shane Clarke added two more to complete the scoring.

Geraldines and Fairview will also play in the last four after wins over Mungret and Knockainey respectively while Regional United will play Aisling Annacotty in the remaining quarter final after a 3-1 win over Kilmallock.

Nenagh AFC ‘B’ maintained their promotion push in Division 2A with a huge win over fellow Tipperary rivals Newport Town ‘C’.

There was no doubting the hero of the afternoon for Nenagh as Diarmuid Fitzpatrick claimed seven of his side’s ten goal haul. Leon Kennedy, Devlin Courtney and Leigh Carry also scored for the winners while Ryan Madden replied for a game Newport side.

The result keeps Nenagh in joint second spot with Aisling Annacotty, four points behind leaders Corbally United.

In Division 3B, Nenagh AFC ‘C’ shared the spoils with Corbally United in a 1-1 draw. Liam Hogan was on target for Nenagh.
