The Black Mills Sessions 2023

Following on from the success of the first session in 2022, Roscrea Heritage Society is looking forward to hosting a series of sessions in the Black Mills from April – September inclusive.

The aim of these sessions is to provide a platform for local artists to perform in an intimate session while raising funds for future heritage projects. All sessions will take place on the last Friday of each month from 8pm - 10pm (Doors at 7.45). On Friday, April 28, the society will host Na Réadóirí (Séamus Moloughney, Paddy Curran and Pat Byrne) for what promises to be a very enjoyable evening of folk music. As seating is limited, tickets (€10) must be purchased in advance from the eventbrite.com website. Bígí Linn!

Save the date: On Friday, May 5, the society will host an evening with award-winning author Laura Churchill Duke. Just how does John Kavanagh, a boy, born and reared in Roscrea end up committing murder in the back woods of rural Nova Scotia in the 1900s? Laura’s novel ‘Rooted in Deception’ follows the life of John and how this petty criminal deceives everyone in his path until he is eventually accused of a heinous and violent crime for which he is ultimately hanged.

But how much of the tragedy was of his own doing and how much had his fate been woven by his enemies? Laura will be travelling from Nova Scotia to Roscrea to give a public presentation about the life of John Kavanagh. More details to follow.
