Local councillors have complained about dereliction in the North Tipperary village of Ballingarry and have called for action to address the problem.

North Tipp village of Ballingarry hit by dereliction

Concern about dereliction in the village of Ballingarry was expressed by Cllr Ger Darcy at the April meeting of the Nenagh Municipal District authority.

He said two derelict buildings on the street were in a shocking state, so much so that masonry from the roofs had fallen onto the footpath below during recent windy weather.

The situation was extremely dangerous and residents were concerned about health and safety. It was an urgent matter.

Cllr Michael O’ Meara said the village had been badly neglected. It was the only village on the N52 that did not have a modern traffic calming scheme introduced and now masonry from neglected buildings was falling out onto the main road.

Cllr Joe Hannigan said there was a very active community group in the village doing great work over the past two decades who deserved better.

The risks posed by derelict buildings was only going to get worse if they were neglected any longer. The council needed to speak to the owners about repairs. “The village is going to be an eyesore if something is not done with these properties.”

District Administrator Rosemary Joyce said the council was looking at certain buildings and what actions could be taken under the Derelict Sites Act.
