Divers recover body in Portumna

Volunteer divers from Lough Derg Sub Aqua Club and Offaly Search & Recovery located a body following a multi-agency search on Lough Derg last Monday evening.

The local dive clubs responded to a call to search for a man believed to have entered the lake at Portumna early that morning. It is understood that the man, who was in his early 40s, was from North Tipperary.

Gardaí attended the scene along with units of the Coast Guard, Fire Service, Civil Defence andTipperary Search & Rescue. A search was co-ordinated outside the town at a lakeside location known as the Swimming Area.

Divers and snorkellers from the Lough Derg and Offaly clubs, along with one member of Gráinne Uaile SAC and Search & Recovery Unit from Mayo, worked together to execute a line search from the shore. Boat and shore cover was provided. At around 8pm, the divers located the body of a male, which was brought to shore.

The identity of the male has not yet been confirmed. The groups involved in the search thanked one another for their assistance and would like to extend sympathy to the deceased man’s family.
