Presidents Prize at Nenagh Lawn Tennis Club

One of the most enjoyable tennis occasions at Nenagh LTC is the annual President’s Prize competition which generally attracts a big entry of members, all entering a mark of compliment to the sitting president, but also to compete for the eagerly sought honour of winning an event in the President’s Prize.

This year was no exception, a very big entry, the weather was good, and the clubhouse ‘goodies’ were delicious. The main event as it were (there were actually four events) was also very enjoyable, giving us some excellent tennis.

President, Michael Gilmartin, was most appreciative of the big entry for the occasion, and he expressed his sincere thanks to Eddie O’Meara of Munster Solar, Toomevara for their generous sponsorship of the competition.

Section I Men’s winners were Thomas Coughlan and Declan O Dalaigh, and runners-up were Damien Egan and Brendan Ryan.

Section II Men was won by Matt O’Hara and Michael Spillane, while Kieran Mullarkey and Lee Jeary were runners-up.

The Section 1 Ladies’ title went to Elaine Hudson and Tara Hackett and runners-up were Emma O’Connor and Valerie Cotter.

Section II ladies was won by Catherine Henry and Lisa Murray, who edged out Aisling Mulcahy and Deirdre Boland.

Link with 1988 Final: Catherine Henry’s win in her final was likely somewhat of a poignant occasion for her, as her late mother, Carol Henry, had won the President’s Prize all of 35 years ago, in 1988, playing with Pat Hough. The event was mixed doubles in those times.

And in yet another link to that 1988 final, Grace Gilmartin, mother of Michael, the current President, was runner-up, playing with Donal O’Connor.

Grace was also then Vice-President of the club. Tim Conway was the President.

Killaloe-Ballina Collins Pharmacy Open Mixed: Killaloe-Ballina Tennis Club’s 2023 Open Mixed Doubles Tournament will run from Saturdays 2nd to 9th September.

The Killaloe-Ballina Open Doubles was always a most enjoyable tournament and this, the club’s first ‘open’ since before the pandemic is very welcome and is attracting a lot of interest.

The tournament is mixed doubles in line with the Munster Grading system, Grades 1&2 combined, while Grades 2–6 are stand-alone events. Full details on the Tennis Ireland Tournament website. Entries by Friday 25th August.
