Domineer sailors wins big at Lough Derg Regatta

Liam Moloney came to Domineer to teach in Carrig National School and with Lough Derg on his doorstep began sailing a Shannon One Design (SOD) boat, winning many trophies along the way.

Now his son Damian and grandson Daniel are following in his footsteps. Liam started the schools sailing programme, which has had wonderful achievement with many participants going on to international level success including the Kellers, Aisling & Eoin.

It is time to get on the water now that everyone is back at school, so get your activities teacher to contact LDYC schools sailing organiser, Padraic Slattery at 086 8787249, all equipment is provided.

Damian Moloney started his sailing at Lough Derg Yacht Club and now his crew in SOD 75 cleaned the board at the Lough Derg Yacht Club regatta, winning the overall, Starter’s Gun prize. The gun was presented by the Hooker family in memory of Lt Col Eric Hooker, who used to start the races at the club for many years. All twelve races must be sailed, there are no discards for the lowest race placement so every race counts. There is no slacking during the weeks racing.

In the twelve races, they had 4 first placements and 3 second placement, a 4th, two 5th and a 10th, winning the Starter’s Gun by one point from Frank Guy (SOD 142), providing an exciting finish to the last days racing. There was also nice silverware for each race.
