Senior Camogie Championship Round Up

Thurles Sarsfields ............... 2-15

Drom & Inch ...........................3-16

Thurles Sarsfields and Drom & Inch played out a cracking group 1 encounter in front of a great crowd in Thurles on Sunday morning.

A very determined and physically strong Sars side really put it up to the county champions who found themselves trailing 1-9 to 1-8 at the break, Drom’s first half goal coming from Mary Burke who excelled at centre forward.

An early Eimear McGrath goal gave Drom the advantage at the start of the second half but there was little between the sides throughout as both sets of forwards exchanged points in a free-flowing, high-scoring game. A third goal for the visitors courtesy of Mary Burke ensured victory for Drom by four points.

The Thurles second half goal coming from a Caoimhe Stakelum penalty. For Sars Karen Kennedy and Lucy Purcell were impressive while Drom’s Miriam Campion proved a handful for the home-side.

Eire Og Annacarty...................1-8

Clonoulty/Rossmore...........0-11

Both Eire Og Annacarty and Clonoulty/Rossmore remain unbeaten after two games of group 2 of the County Senior Championship after a hard fought draw on Saturday in Annacarty.

The home-side trailed by two points at the break, 0-6 to 1-5 with Clonoulty’s goal coming from Cait Devane who finished with 1-7 of her side’s total with Avril Quirke the only other scorer when she pointed in the first half.

The game was marked by a lot of frees and the stop-start nature didn’t allude itself to high scoring, free-flowing game that one might have hoped for. Instead, it turned out to be a tough battle between western neighbours.

Annacarty made a couple of positional changes coming into the game after their win over Cashel in their opening game.

Orla O’Brien switched to wing back and along with Karen Fox and Shauna Heffernan they produced a brilliant performance and proved to be Annacarty’s best line.

Clonoulty’s attack which were very impressive against Kickhams in the first round were stifled by the Annacarty defence and only mustered two points in the whole second half.

Annacarty outscored the visitors 0-5 to 0-2 after the restart and also had six different scorers to Clonoulty’s two but despite their best efforts couldn’t manage to record a famous victory which they will likely be disappointed about.

For Clonoulty, Eimear Loughman was excellent at wing back while Clodagh Quirke was solid throughout at number 6. Eva O’Dwyer was prominent for Annacarty with six points, four frees while Leah Heffernan who played well in midfield, Danielle Ryan, Rachel O’Dwyer, Eibhlis McDonnel and Jean Kelly all scored a point each.

The other game in the group between Cashel King Cormacs and Knockavilla Kickhams was postponed due to the tragedy in Cashel last week.
