An intimate evening with singer songwriter Nic An tSaoi takes place on Friday week, November 10, at 9pm, in the Thomas MacDonagh Museum, Cloughjordan
The gig is free of charge, though booking essential through Eventbrite, or contact the museum.
This is the final Live and Local After Hours at the Museum event and Nic an tSaoi will perform a selection of her own compositions for this intimate performance, providing an enchanting, inspiring, and delightful experience.
As part of the Live and Local After Hours at the Museum series, the Thomas MacDonagh Museum commissioned Nic an tSaoi to create a new song in response to its collection.
On November 10, she will perform the much-anticipated world premiere performance of this new song, Máthair le Misneach. Among her repertoire of original compositions, she will serenade the audience with John John, a ballad by Thomas MacDonagh, and her unique interpretation of the mediaeval ballad Hellelil and Hildebrand, which served as inspiration for Frederick William Burton's The Meeting in the Turret Stairs painting – a piece with its own ties to the museum.
Originally from Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, Maggie McEntee, performing as Nic an tSaoi (that’s her surname as Gaeilge) began her journey into songwriting and performing original music during the mid-1990s. She played the stages of venues like The International Bar and Temple Bar Music Centre, showcasing her talents. Alongside her musical pursuits, she studied Multimedia and worked in Vicar Street, Dublin.
Nic an tSaoi has independently crafted and released several singles, including notable tracks like Georgia's Black Iris and the hugely popular The Apple Walk. More recently, she has shared live recordings of her songs East Wall and Swallow in the Hollow collaborating with Cloughjordan's talented musicians Wendy Bailey on double bass, Nicholas Ward on guitar, Ruairí McBride on mandolin, and Caoimhín Woods on bones. This collaboration results in a delightful fusion of poetic lyrics and eclectic soundscapes. She has performed at events like the Clonmel Apple Festival, Féile na nÚLL, and Electric Picnic's Global Green stage, establishing her as a talented and diverse artist in the music scene.
