Nenagh and Newport exit FAI Junior Cup

Fairview Rangers 4-0 Newport Town

Newport Town crashed out of the FAI Junior Cup at the third round stage following a disappointing defeat to Fairview Rangers on Saturday evening.

Newport were lethargic from the off and had the misfortune to meet a Fairview side totally focused. The nine-time winners took just ten minutes to break the deadlock. An error at the back presented Kane Connolly with an opening and he duly punished the visitors, firing across the keeper into the far corner.

Again, it was poor marking for the Tipperary side as the hosts doubled their lead ten minutes later. A good delivery by Blake Curran saw Liam Quinn react quickest against a flat footed defence to head home.

There was little Newport could do about the third goal as Shane Tracey curled a 25-yard free kick to the top corner giving Harry Ryan no chance in the Newport goal.

Any Newport comeback after the restart never materialised and it was the home side who completed the scoring through Filip Mostowy.

Newport Town: Harry Ryan; Eoin Guilfoyle, Eoin Looney, Drew McLean, Christy Connors, Elliot Slattery, Pa Murtagh, Brian O'Sullivan, Christy Doyle, Darren Collins, David Ryan. Subs: Killian O’Malley, Jay Ryan, Jamie Kavanagh, Luke Ryan, Peter O’Sullivan.

Nenagh AFC 1-3 Charleville

Nenagh AFC could not take advantage of home advantage in their FAI Junior Cup third round game with Charleville on Sunday losing 3-1 in Brickfields.

Despite being tangled deep in the relegation battle in the Premier League, Charleville deployed a much more attacking side on Sunday to advance in the National competition.

Charleville took the lead when Pat O’Callaghan chipped Aaron Savage to score but Nenagh were back on level terms shortly after when Eamon White scored a fine goal.

After the break O’Callaghan turned provider when his delivery was volleyed home by Gary Ward. With Nenagh chasing an equaliser, Charleville struck again when O’Callaghan notched his second to complete the scoring.
