Templemore Town Hall renovation making good progress

Work on the refurbishment and repurposing of this much-loved town landmark commenced in May 2023 with the aim of preserving and ensuring the sustainability of the building and to provide modern facilities for generations to come.

These facilities will include a new home for Templemore Library as well as cultural and enterprise areas and a community room. The development also includes a civic plaza adjacent to the building.

On Wednesday last, Thurles Municipal District and the contractors, Leetherm, facilitated a site visit and update on progress for representatives of Templemore Community Development Association (TCDA), who are supporting partners in the project. The visit was very informative and all concerned were very impressed with the progress of the project and the scale of the internal space in the building. Among the works completed are the clear-out of internal structures and the stripping out of old redundant services. The installation of the new services is well progressed and the lift shaft structure, which will eventually ensure inclusive access to all parts of the building, has been built. Structural work to form the new internal rooms has also commenced. So far the contractors say that no structural surprises have been experienced.

On the site visit were: Tom Peters (TCDA), Kieran Ladden ( Tipp. CC), Sharon Scully (District Administrator), Deirdre O’Shea (Tipp. CC), Ken Lee (Leetherm), Declan Glynn (McHugh/Glynn & Associates), Bridget Jones (TCDA), Kevin Ludlow (TCDA), Aoife Cahill (Project Engineer/Tipp CC).

The Town Hall has been closed to the public since the dissolution of Templemore Town Council in 2014. Some four years later, Tipperary County Council secured the structure and fabric of the building at a cost of €525,000. Following the planning process, the go-ahead was given this year for the current project with funding of over €4 million received from the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund, the Dept of Rural and Community Affairs and Tipperary County Council. The funding includes design, construction and fit-out costs.

When the remodeling and refurbishment of the Town Hall is complete, it will retake its position at the heart of our town and once again become a major community hub for a wide range of community activities. The timeframe for completion, which is currently on schedule, is July 2024.
