Another All-Ireland Snooker Club title for New Institute
By Tony Seymour
New Institute Snooker Club are All Ireland Championship section winners for the first time as the team of Patsy Farrell (captain), Tony Seymour, Dave Garrett, Tom Ford, Noel Gleeson, and Darren Delaney were successful at the Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney last weekend.
Despite losing their first match of the group stages on Thursday morning, the team came through their last two matches to qualify for the last 16 which took place on Saturday morning, which they duly won 3-0.
The Munster champions were starting to improve as the tournament progressed and it started to show on the table the effort of practice of recent months. The quarter finals were played on Sunday afternoon after four tough days of competition against the CCC’s from Limavady, Derry. Wins from Seymour, Gleeson and Farrell ensured New Institute progressed to the semi-finals against another Ulster club, St Pats.
St. Pats beat New Institute in the group stages, so Nenagh had it all to do. Noel Gleeson beat former Northern Ireland international Brian Milne 2-0, followed by wins for Patsy Farrell and Tony Seymour with Dave Garrett and Darren Delaney still in play.
The final on Sunday evening featured yet another Northern Irish opponent in Roddie’s Snooker Club.
Some fantastic matches were played and despite being down 1-0, 2-0, 2-1 and 1-0 on four tables, the lads fought back brilliantly with Noel Gleeson winning the first match 3-0. Tony Seymour was next to win his match 3-1 despite losing the first frame. 2-0 up in matches with team captain Patsy Farrell, Dave Garrett and Darren Delaney fighting hard.
Dave Garrett unluckily lost two black-ball frames, before pulling one back for 2-1. Farrell came back from 2-0 down to make it a final frame decider, and Darren Delaney also came from 2-1 down to also make it a final frame decider.
Patsy Farrell, who played fantastically in the knockout stages, lost in a thriller on the pink ball to leave the sides poised at 2-1 with two matches remaining.
It was down to Dave Garrett or Darren Delaney to find a way to win, and it was Delaney who played a fantastic controlled final frame decider to the give the club its first ever All Ireland Championship section title.
The New Institute ‘A’s were defending All-Ireland Premier champions and the team of Brendan O’Donoghue, Mark Walsh (captain), Tom Gleeson, Paudie Kelly and Mark Gleeson flew through a tough group to qualify for the quarter finals, only to be pipped in a close battle against Youghal CYMS.
They will be disappointed after winning the Munster club title the week before but overall, the club have had outstanding championships again with two Munster and one All-Ireland title again this year.
The Youth Ccademy will be back again on Friday from 7 to 8.00pm. Contact Tony Seymour through the club’s Facebook page.
