Lawson Cup

Holycross 2-3 Nenagh AFC

Nenagh AFC made hard work of their Lawson Cup clash with Holycross on Sunday before achieving their objective of a place in round three.

Nenagh took the lead when Cillian Scully finished to the net following a corner kick.

The Tipperary side doubled their advantage midway through the half when Ryan Gilmartin’s delivery was headed home by Eoin Coffey.

Holycross pulled one back just before the break and when Nenagh were reduced to ten men shortly after half time the home side responded by levelling the tie.

With the game heading for spot kicks, Nenagh struck. A through ball from Cillian Scully was dispatched to the net by Saeed Ryan.

Nenagh will now play either Hyde or Glenview for a place in the quarter finals.

Ballynanty Rovers 3-0 Newport Town

Newport Town were second best in their Premier League outing with Ballynanty Rovers on Saturday evening.

The visitors had a great chance to take the lead 25 minutes when Cillian O’Shea’s through ball saw Christy Doyle skip round Balla keeper Eoghan Sherlock but the finish did not match the build-up and the chance was wasted.

Five minutes later, Balla made them pay when Josh Adams scored from a corner.

Two second half goals from Darragh Rainsford sealed the win for the home side.
