The late Joe Delahunty

Knockshegowna bids sad farewell to former player

It was with great sadness that the untimely death of Joe Delahunty occurred on 6th May last.

Joe had battled his illness with bravery and determination over the past number of months. Joe had planned on running the Dublin City marathon in October of last year but had to postpone due to treatment which he was undergoing. Such was his determination he was focused on getting better and participating in the 2025 run, but sadly this is not to be.

Joe attended Shinrone NS and then Borrisokane Community College where he played hurling at all age groups. A very strong and athletic player, Joe was a man you wanted on your team and there are many teams out there who will now feel his absence.

One of Joe’s greatest achievements was being part of the Knockshegowna hurling team which won the Junior ‘A’ North & County finals in 1993. Knockshe had not won a county junior title since 1969 so this victory was massive for this small club. Joe lined out at wing back on this team and was a key player throughout the championship.

Joe was highly active throughout his life volunteering his time to local organisations for the betterment of others. An active member of the Tipperary Civil Defence, Joe was always available for a search, let it be on land or water and also represented his county at national level. Joe’s generosity of his time was known to all those who knew him.

Joe will be missed by all in Knockshegowna GAA club and we extend our sincere sympathy to his wife Nicola, his mother Peig, brother’s Michael, Martin, Pat and John, extended family members and to his many, many, friends and relatives. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
