Philly Ryan to become new Tipp Senior Football manager

Brendan Cummins re-ratified as under 20 hurling manager for another two years.

Former goalkeeper Philly Ryan is expected to be announced as the new Tipperary senior football manager later this week.

The Clonmel Commercials clubman has been selected by the Tipperary football committee to succeed Paul Kelly as manager.

A hugely popular character, Ryan lined out between the posts for Tipperary for thirteen seasons between 1991 and 2003, playing in three Munster Finals in 1994, 1995 and 2002.

He previously was involved as an underage selector with the under 21’s in 2006 and managed the minors in 2007 & 2008, the latter reaching a Munster Final where the Conor Sweeney captained team lost to Kerry after a replay.

Since then, he has been heavily involved with his own Clonmel Commercials who have become the dominant force in football in the county. He managed them to the 2012 senior title and has been a coach with them in recent years.

At last weeks Tipperary County Board meeting, under 20 football manager Niall Fitzgerald and minor joint managers Shane Hennessy and Damien McCormack have been ratified for another year.

Also, at last week’s County Board meeting in Thurles, Brendan Cummins was re-ratified as under 20 hurling manager for another two years.

The Ballybacon/Grange clubman has been manager for the last three years, reaching a Munster final in 2022, but fell at the semi-final stage a year later, before this year being crowned Munster champions before falling to Offaly in the All-Ireland Final.

While not confirmed on the evening, it is expected that James Woodlock will remain on as minor manager for a fifth season, while Liam Cahill continues as senior manager for the third year of his current term.
