Ireland's 4x400m Women's Relay team agonisingly missed out on a bronze medal.

Brave display by Team Ireland

No medal but national record set at Paris Olympics

The Ireland 4x400m Women's Relay team agonisingly missed out on a podium finish at the Paris Olympics.

As expected the United States claimed gold but Team Ireland – made up of Sophie Becker, Rhasidat Adeleke, Phil Healy and Newport's Sharlene Mawdsley – flirted with third place before being pipped in the final stretch by Great Britain. Netherlands took the silver.

This was a stirring display by Ireland, who bravely flew the Irish flag and in the process set a new national record.

The games conclude later today and our Olympic swimming medallists Daniel Wiffen and Mona McSharry have been chosen as Ireland's flagbearers for Sunday’s closing ceremony in Paris.
