Box 1 finalists John Spillane and Eamon Kelly

Nenagh Squash Club hosts successful Summer Box League

The winners have been crowned following the finale of Nenagh Squash Clubs Summer Box League.

Twelve members across three boxes battled each other in the semi-finals. They gave us some nail-biting, edge-of-seat gameplay that resulted in both players and viewers exhausted when the winner of each game qualified for the finals. However, there was not much time for R&R because finals night brought around the real fiery games.

John Spillane Jnr and Paul Gavin started off with John taking an early lead in game one bringing the game up to match-point. Gavin then started his comeback until a well-executed drop-shot proved too much for his racquet, resulting in an urgent rush to find a replacement. With his momentum broken; John Spillane was able to secure to first game, but Gavin wasn’t finished yet. With a lot of terrific and miraculous shots from both parties, it was Paul who managed to rake back the next three sets, taking the win.

Niall Cahill and Peter Kennedy were next up on court and thus began some of the longest rallies ever seen. Both players showed truly how physical squash can be and it made for great entertainment for the in-person and online viewers.

Cahill went two sets up but this did not stop an amazing battle in the third set going Kennedy’s way. It seemed as though he would carry the momentum through the fourth set and bring it to a fifth but nearing the end of four arduous sets, one too many mistakes slipped in, and Niall Cahill managed to convert the set into a 3-1 victory.

The third game was our box one titans of John Spillane and Eamon Kelly. These two have been playing each other for years and it makes every point hard earned when your opponent knows a lot of your cheeky moves.

The first game was filled with some great returns and clever shots but ultimately Spillane took the win, 15-13. Kelly, spurred on by the narrow loss, came out of the gates running in the second set to win it 15-11. Despite some great defensive and offensive plays, Eamon Kelly was on form and had an answer for a lot of Johns shots and eventually took the win 3-1
