Munster Junior Cup 3rd Round

Newport Town 1-1 Mungret Regional (AET, Newport won 4-3 on pens)

Newport Town qualified for the open draw stage of the Munster Junior Cup by knocking out joint Premier League leaders Mungret Regional at Derryleigh Park on Sunday.

The game looked to be going to script when Kian Barry, with the help of a deflection, fired Mungret ahead in the opening quarter.

Newport played their way back into the tie and ten minutes into the second half Jamie Kavanagh came in at the back post to meet Ciaran Carey’s cross and he fired home to level the tie.

Neither side could find a breakthrough in open play, so penalties were called for to decide the game. Newport goalkeeper Seamus O’Regan paved the way with a couple of crucial saves, allowing Joe Shanahan to step up and hit the deciding kick to send Newport through as their excellent cup form continues as they look to progress to the a national section of the FAI Junior Cup next Sunday in an all-Tipperary third round clash with Nenagh AFC in Brickfields.

Premier League

Ballynanty Rovers 1-1 Nenagh AFC

Nenagh AFC had to settle for a share of the spoils in game bossed for the most part, when they finished 1-1 with Ballynanty Rovers at LIT on Saturday evening.

The visitors weathered some early pressure including a missed penalty before finding their feet, after which they created a number of good chances. Nenagh took the lead midway through the first half; a fine flowing move was finished to the net by the hard-working Matt O’Gorman.

As you expect when you visit Balla, the home side upped the tempo after the restart but found Kieran Barr and Colm Hayden impossible to break through. There was little the centre back pairing could do about the equaliser. Shane Dillon gathered the ball forty yards from goal and let fly with an unstoppable shot that flew to the top corner of the net.

Nenagh AFC: Carl Williams; Lee Mowatt; Eoin Coffey; Kieran Barr; Colm Hayden; Dylan Morrison; Saeed Ryan; Ryan Gilmartin; Matt O'Gorman; Adam Ryan; Nathan Kelly. Subs: Bryan McGee; Cillian Scully.

Lower Leagues

In Division 2B, Lough Derg recorded their sixth win from nine games with a 5-1 away win over Murroe on Sunday.

In difficult conditions, Derg enjoyed plenty of early possession but found the Murroe keeper in fine form. It took 25 minutes for the breakthrough with Dan Fogarty blasting home. Ten minutes later, Jason Monaghan drilled a cracker from outside the box. On 65 minutes, Alex Quinn started and finished a super team goal, counter-attacking from a corner in a sweeping move. Murroe pulled one back on 73 minutes but the result was secured on eighty with captain Jay Collins finishing well. The last word fell to JP Mbokha Tansia who took a ball on his chest and buried it for a 5-1 win.

In Division 3B, Lough Derg ‘B’ defeated Newtown Rangers 3-2 with Jordan Pratt scoring a hat-trick.
