Coffee morning fundraiser for those displaced by wars
Come along to the Methodist Church Hall, The Mall, Roscrea, on Thursday, November 28, and enjoy coffee, cake and conversation. There will be homemade biscuits, scones and other goodies from which to choose. Drop by any time between 10am to 12.30pm and do bring your friends.
Right now, there are so many arenas of war and civil unrest that we find it difficult to get our heads around what is happening. Ukraine and Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories, with Gaza and Lebanon, have been forefront in our hearts and minds – understandably. But a savage war has been raging in South Sudan; millions of people - men, women and children - are displaced, facing starvation and unable to work their land. South Sudan became an independent country in 2011 amid much hope and optimism, following a referendum in which its people voted overwhelmingly to separate from Sudan.
However, following a power crisis which erupted in 2013, South Sudan has spiralled into a conflict, which has spread across most parts of the country and leading to deaths of thousands of people and widespread displacement.
Today, over 7 million people – half of the population – are facing extreme hunger and high rates of acute malnutrition.
