MEP raises flags at Tipp school

A special day at Sacred Heart, Roscrea

Last week, Sacred Heart Primary School, Roscrea, celebrated a momentous event as broadcaster and advocate Cynthia Ní Mhurchú, MEP, visited the school to raise the Blue Star Flag and Amber Flag.

The ceremony was a poignant reminder of the school’s dedication to both European values and mental health awareness.

Ms Ní Mhurchú, a prominent figure in Irish media and a passionate supporter of education and community initiatives, was warmly welcomed by the pupils, staff, and local community members who gathered to witness the flag-raising event. Her presence added a touch of prestige to the occasion, underscoring the importance of the school's achievements. Ms Ní Murchú was full of enthusiasm and praise for the great welcome and the positive atmosphere she experienced in the school throughout her visit.

The Blue Star Flag is a symbol of the school’s participation in the Blue Star Programme, an initiative that aims to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of the European Union among primary school children. The program, which is co-funded by the EU and the Irish government, encourages pupils to learn about European cultures, languages, history, and institutions. The initiative has been successfully ongoing in the school for a number of years now.

FOCUS ON THE EU

Throughout the academic year, students at Sacred Heart Roscrea engaged in a variety of activities and projects centered around the EU. These included research projects especially in art, history and geography as well as learning Spanish as part of the languages initiative. The pupils also engage in the study of democracy and engage in the democratic process by electing their own school council which represents the student body and facilitates the student voice. The culmination of their hard work and dedication was the raising of the Blue Star Flag, signifying their commitment to being informed and active European citizens.

PROMOTING MENTAL HEALTH

The Amber Flag, on the other hand, is a testament to Sacred Heart Roscrea’s efforts in promoting mental health and well-being within the school community. This initiative, spearheaded by Pieta House, aims to create healthy, inclusive environments that support the mental well-being of students and staff alike. Wellbeing is not only a cornerstone of the curriculum but also a long established approach to school life. The Amber Flag now flies proudly alongside the Blue Star Flag, representing the school’s holistic approach to education.

The ceremony began a welcome by the school principal, Mrs Sutton, who highlighted the significance of these achievements and expressed gratitude to everyone involved in the projects.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Cynthia Ní Mhurchú then engaged in a question and answer session with pupils as she shared her insights on the importance of European unity and mental health awareness.

The raising of the Blue Star Flag and Amber Flag at Sacred Heart Roscrea is more than a ceremonial act; it is a reflection of the school’s dedication to fostering a well-rounded and informed pupil body. These initiatives not only enhance the educational experience but also equip students with the knowledge and skills to thrive in a diverse and interconnected world.
