Nenagh Celtic seeks a home

A SOCCER club in Nenagh that has no grounds of its own should be considered for a site provided by Tipperary County Council, Cllr Pamela Quirke O’ Meara has stated.

Cllr Quirke O’ Meara, speaking at the November meeting of the Nenagh Municipal District, said Nenagh Celtic Soccer Club had no grounds, despite catering for generations of adult and juvenile players since its formation in 1981.

She urged the council to look at providing a site for the club so it could have its own headquarters.

With a total of over 180 members, it provided a great outlet for young people in the town.

The Independent councillor said the club had funds of over €90,000 and was eager to buy a ground. Currently, it had the use of a temporary pitch in Ballinaclough that had a Portaloo.

Cllr Michael O’ Meara, supporting the proposal, said the council had a considerable land bank in Nenagh and could look at offering the club a site. He proposed the council meet with club officials to enter talks on the issue.

District Administrator Rosemary Joyce said she was aware that the club had been looking for a site for at least the past 10 years. It was great that the town was served by two top class soccer clubs.

Ms Joyce said officials would be willing to meet with Nenagh Celtic, because the council was prepared to consider the proposal to offer the club a site.
