Talented Hogan’s new graphic novel

A talented local cartoonist is to launch his new book in Nenagh.

Seán Hogan, a native of Killeen, Riverstown, Birr, is a former underage hurler with Lorrha, and son of former club and Tipperary hurler Ken Hogan.

This is Sean’s latest graphic novel, entitled Brotherhood Part 1. It is set in Tipperary during the Irish War of Independence, centering on four teenagers who are caught in its tragic events.

Brotherhood is set in North Tipperary and is a darkly comedic tale of youthful rebellion set against the brutal backdrop of the Irish War of Independence.

In the rural, rolling hills of revolutionary Ireland, four teenagers engage in their own fight for freedom. Macdara, a young Irish teen, is dragged into the raging Irish War of Independence when he is accidentally involved in the death of a British “Black and Tan” constable. To cover his tracks, he and his friends, Colm, Ciara, and Seamus form the Brotherhood.

With a rich cast of characters, rural Irish setting, and sharp commentary on the myths of heroism and the cost of freedom, Brotherhood offers a fresh and original perspective on a pivotal moment in Irish history.

Brotherhood, Part 1 of 2, is a 92-page black and white graphic novel with a full-colour cover, containing 76 pages of story, and is intended for a mature audience.

A self-published venture, Seán has run a hugely successful fundraising campaign, raising just over €5,000 for the publishing costs.

As a young boy, Sean attended art lessons in Tin Jug Studio in Birr, and as he advanced through his teenage years his interest in art never waned. His talent grew and it was evident to everyone that he had a special gift as he was able to pursue it for the first time with a job in Kilkenny.

Upon reaching adulthood he began earning a living in Copenhagen, Denmark, as a cartoonist and storyboard artist before moving to Helsinki, Finland where he lives. He has worked on animated shows for Disney, Warner Bros., Nickelodeon, and Apple TV+.
