This photograph was taken at the D’Estelle-Roe house on the Roscrea Road during Arthur’s last visit to Templemore in 2019. Arthur (front, right) is pictured with some of his family members, who travelled with him along with locals John Walsh, Ronan Loughnane and CJ D’Estelle-Roe.

Passing of Arthur Carden

The sad news of the passing of Arthur Carden came to us this month at the ripe old age of 95.

A descendant of the Carden family that came to Templemore in 1695, Arthur's first trip to Templemore was away back in the 1950s to an auction in Skehanagh house in Killea, where he purchased six chairs that had come from Templemore Abbey.

Arthur kept up his connection with the town all over the years and he loved to visit, making many friends along the way. He produced a number of books on the Cardens in Templemore, Barnane and Fishmoyne, as he passionately researched his family history, his work proving invaluable to local researchers. He loved to visit Barnane and regularly called to visit his ancestors in the old graveyard.

The Carden burial plot in the Town Park was another favourite. Unfortunately, Arthur sustained a broken hip on December 23 as a result of a fall and was recovering well following surgery but he passed suddenly on January 2.

A man who lived life to the full has gone to his eternal reward, as has a good friend of Templemore and Barnane.

His wish was that his ashes be spread in the graveyard in Barnane, a wish his family will carry out with a memorial at a later date. May his gentle soul rest in eternal peace.
