Revolutionary Women of Tipperary

Ormond Historical Society talk next Monday

While a great deal has been written in recent years on the role of men in the independence struggle, the part played by women has been largely neglected and under-researched, particularly so at local level.

Well-known Tipperary historian, Dr Noreen Higgins McHugh, has redressed the imbalance in the case of our own county with her ground-breaking new book, ‘Revolutionary Women of Tipperary, 1914-1923’, published last year. Dr Higgins McHugh is our guest speaker at the Ormond Historical Society’s lecture on Monday, January 20, next at the Abbey Court Hotel at the usual starting time of 8pm.

Dr Higgins McHugh will speak on the part played by Tipperary women - particularly through the Cumann na nBan organisation - in the struggle for independence during the period 1914-1923. She has researched the subject in great depth, identifying hitherto unknown Cumman na mBan branches and personnel in places such as Nenagh, Silvermines, Toomevara, Puckaun and Kilbarron, to name just a few places. In her beautifully illustrated talk, she will highlight the vital role women played, both locally and nationally, in shaping Ireland’s struggle for independence.

Dr Higgins McHugh has written and spoken extensively on several aspects of Tipperary history. She has contributed to various historical journals and is currently Secretary of the Tipperary Society. She is probably best known for her study, ‘Tipperary’s Tithe War, 1830-1838’, published in 2002. She also has a deep interest in genealogy and in 2018 published ‘A Guide to Tracing your Tipperary Ancestors’.

All are invited to join us at the Abbey Court on Monday, January 20, at 8pm for what will be a ground-breaking and fascinating talk on a neglected aspect of our Tipperary past. Members as usual free; non-members: €10.
