A group of local second level students have participated in a nationwide ‘Run 100 challenge’ fundraiser for the Irish Heart Foundation with widespread support from their colleagues and friends.

The challenge was to complete 100km or miles during the month of February as the fundraiser for the benefit of “The hearts that can't”.

St Mary's Secondary School, Newport, Sixth Year students, including Darragh Gavin, Jack Hayes, Seán O’ Connor, Owen Grant, Martin McCabe, Luke Kennedy and Conor O’Brien took up the challenge to complete the endurance, supported by Yearhead Mr Goggin.

The students involved finished with a 1km run through the town at lunch time on Monday week last to cap off the challenge and successful undertaking for the Irish Heart Foundation.

The foundation explained: “Our Run 100 in February challenge is perfect for team building and for improving your team’s health. It brings your workplace together and engages staff at all levels. It increases workplace well-being making your team feel better physically and mentally, which helps them to achieve more.”

There was a feeling of satisfaction by the participants on the completion of the challenge and there was also the knowledge that they had participated in helping to benefit assistance and services to the many who suffer from heart conditions or as the foundation so aptly put it to "Run 100 for the hearts that can't". Well done to all.
