County Hurling League Round 3 Review
Division 1
Kiladangan 2-14 JK Brackens 5-22
JK Brackens overpowered Kiladangan in Puckane on Friday.
The Mid side had their first goal in the eighth minute when Shane Doyle went low from a free. Doyle finished the games top-scorer with 2-8 (1-4f, 0-1’65) with Michael Cahill scoring goal number two. Brackens were six to the good on sixteen minutes before Kiladangan began to move with Conor Byrne scoring his third.
It was 2-12 to 0-11 at half time and Brackens came out of the stalls with three unanswered points from sub Jamie Ormond. There was more to come in the guise of a third goal and Doyle’s second.
Then Kiladangan received a lifeline when Paul Flynn goaled in the 42nd minute. Things improved further as Ruairi Gleeson’s return to action was marked by another goal.
Brackens put the game to bed with the fourth goal as Michael Cahill doubled his tally in the 43rd minute. It was all over bar the shouting after Stephen Cahill scored the fifth goal.
Toomevara 1-16 Roscrea 3-16
Roscrea picked up their first win of the league away to Toomevara on Friday.
The home side began the better but a Roscrea goal on nine minutes from Kenny Lee got sparked the visitors into life. Four points from play from Dan Ryan were eye-catching as Roscrea led 1-10 to 0-10 at half time.
A goal within seconds of the restart from Evan Fitzpatrick set Roscrea up well and a third goal from Jason Gilmartin on the three quarter mark pushed them ten points clear. The home side managed a late goal from Mark McCarthy but Roscrea ran out deserved six point winners.
Drom & Inch 2-13 Nenagh Eire Og 3-18
Nenagh Eire Og were comfortable winners over Drom & Inch at The Ragg on Saturday.
They did the spadework in the first half, leading 2-15 to 1-5 at the break with the goals from Michael Heffernan and Philip Hickey while Barry Heffernan’s three points from play waere also noteworthy.
Jack Lillis got the Drom goal and David Collins a second in the second half as they ate into Nenagh’s lead but a Ben West goal ensured Eire Og gained their second win.
Thurles Sarsfields 1-18 Borris-Ileigh 1-21
Borris-Ileigh’s good star continued with a three point win over Thurles Sarsfields in Thurles on Saturday.
The visitors started the stronger with Patrick Ryan continuing his excellent form with 1-2 (1-10 in total) and they maintained that margin to half time, extending it, 1-13 to 0-10 with James Devaney, Tom Delaney, and Conor Kenny to the fore. They went nine clear on forty minutes before Sarsfields began a recovery which ended up coming up three points short.
Lorrha 1-23 Moycarkey/Borris 3-13
Lorrha produced a strong second half performance to see off Moycarkey/Borris in Tony Reddin Park on Sunday.
The home side were quickly out of the blocks and into a 0-6 to 0-1 lead after ten minutes but a goal from a free by Kieran Morris knocked them back as the visitors gained the upper hand with Kieran Cummins and Kyle Shelly to the fore as Lorrha led 0-12 to 1-6 at the break.
The visitors had the breeze in the second half but despite losing Darragh Guinan to injury, Lorrha upped a gear, outscoring Moycarkey 1-8 to 0-4 in the first twenty minutes with Eoin McIntyre getting the goal, part of a 1-4 haul from play while Conor Kennedy (0-4), Brendan Fogarty (0-2) and Colm Fogarty (0-8) all in good form. Lorrha conceded two late sloppy goals to Kyle Shelly and Killian Cantwell but held onto record their second win.
Division 2
Burgess 4-17 Killenaule 2-15
Burgess got the better of Killenaule in Kilcoleman on Sunday. The visitors got off to the better start with Mark Stakelum a towering threat at full forward and his goal on twenty minutes pushed them 1-9 to 0-5 in front. Burgess responded when Diarmuid O'Donoghue returned the favour three minutes later, followed by a second from Joe O'Dwyer in the 26th minute. Killenaule were up for the challenge and from the puckout, travelled down the field to rattle the net for a 2-10 to 2-8 half time lead.
The home-side came out strongly in the second half, scoring three of the four opening points before being awarded a penalty in the 38th minute for a pull down on Kieran Grace. Goalkeeper Ronan Tucker travelled up to take the penalty and sent the Killenaule keeper in the wrong way. Joe O'Dwyer sealed the deal with his second goal.
Division 3
Newport 2-23 Shannon Rovers 0-21
Newport claimed their first win with eight points to spare over Shannon Rovers in Lacken Park on Sunday.
The sides were level at six points after the first quarter before Newport gained the upper hand and an Aaron O’Neill goal helped them a 1-12 to 0-10 half time lead. A Shane Flanagan goal early in the second half gave Newport breathing room.
Portroe 1-16 Borrisokane 2-13
Portroe and Borrisokane shared the spoils in Portroe on Sunday. The visitors enjoyed a 1-11 to 0-7 half time lead, but Port came roaring back after the break to earn their second draw.
Division 5
Kilruane MacDonaghs a 4-12 to 0-18 victory over Galtee Rovers in Bansha on Saturday with the goals from Páidí Williams, Michael Hennelly, Conor Doheny and Fiachradh Ahearne Woods.
Division 6
Knockshegowna continued their strong start to the league with a comprehensive win away to Killea on Sunday.
